I’ve said this before but it needs saying again. There is a lot of shitty, badly-researched “journalism” about smartphone and tablet platforms out there. I do not give a rat’s ass if you are an Android fan, an iPhone fan, or a (god forbid) Windows Mobile 6.5 fan. Do your fucking research, present the facts, and then give your opinion. Every day, I wake up and...

Microsoft is desperately trying to convince themselves their “no compromise” approach to tablet computing going forward is the good one. I guess desktop applications being completely unusable with a finger as a pointing device isn’t considered a compromise to Microsoft.

Authors@Google: Ogi Ogas →
If you’ve got forty-something minutes to spare, Ogi Ogas gave a talk at Google about how sexual attraction differs between males and females, and explains the age-old question “why the hell do women want to make babies with Edward Cullen so much?” Oh, and also explains why straight males loooove the shemale porn. (Not kidding.) (via halcy who linked it earlier in the week)

In June when it was clear that Apple wasn’t announcing an iPhone 5 this summer, I said Apple could probably get away with not releasing a new iPhone this year. Sure looks like I was right.

My friend David put together a magazine. I flipped through the preview on MagCloud, and it looks pretty damn good. If you like great writing, you should definitely check it out. Can’t wait for the print copy to get here. :)

Dear whiny-ass student organizations, Tuition fees in Quebec are ridiculously low compared to the rest of Canada1. Even more so compared to the US. If you stopped spending all your money on non-essential shit, maybe you’d have money left to pay your tuition fees instead of whining about how expensive education is. That might explain the lack of quality of the education system,...

Meant to make a post to say I graduated from college a couple months back, but they all ended up being too long and boring. Whoopsie. So yeah. If I had to choose a single bit of code I’m most proud of writing for a college project, it would have to be HappyHolidaysYouBastard.vb.

“With qHD displays becoming the norm, most modern smartphones can nearly match even the highest-resolution tablet display. Pixel-for-pixel, I can see almost as much information in the palm of my hand as I can with an unwieldy screen that requires two hands to use with any precision whatsoever.” Pixel-per-pixel, you could shove almost as much information on a Retina Display or a qHD...

One More Lens →
One of the sad things about the Sony NEX series of cameras is the limited selection of E-mount lenses. Until recently, there were only three lenses, and they were the only options with image stabilization and autofocus unless you decided to splurge on the bulky LA-EA1 A-mount adapter. Luckily, the E-mount is built in such a way that most other lens mounts can be adapted to it, meaning you...

HTC Holiday: 4.5 inches. Samsung GT-I9250: 4.65 inches. Samsung GT-I9220: 5.29 inches. Can someone please project what the average smartphone display size will be two years from now? My bet is on 10.1 inches.

I lent my friend Luc-Olivier my Samsung Omnia 7 so he could take it for a spin when I was in Quebec City a week and a half ago. He wrote up this post giving general impressions on the OS. I do have a lot to say about Windows Phone and its disappointing lack of success, but I’ll save that for another post.

The end of SlideScreen →
SlideScreen was one of the few gorgeous Android apps, and now Larva Labs has pulled the plug since third-party apps were recently revoked the right to access Gmail’s data. Sucks, really. I’d make a joke about openness but I’m so sick of hearing about Google these days that it’s not even funny anymore. (via David)

– Chris L. Wiggins, Google’s creative lab’s creative director. Taken from The Auteur vs. the Committee. Why is it important to distinguish Web apps from “real” software? Shouldn’t Web apps try their hardest to match or surpass the experience of native applications?

David Switches from a Droid Eris to the iPhone →
One of the things David mentions for switching is not having much invested in the ecosystem, and this is something I feel is overlooked about Android. Apps on the Android Market tend to be free and ad-supported. Apps that are actually worth paying for are either really rare1 or aren’t available in paid, ad-free versions, which is a bummer. The App Store definitely has free apps, but...

Why My Mom Bought an Android, Returned It, and Got... →
I frequently argue that the user experience on Android phones would be better as a whole if Google had complete control over the platform, much like Apple does with the iPhone. Manufacturer customizations are the cancer that is ruining Android devices. Not only does Android have rough edges to begin with, but every manufacturer feels compelled to sprinkle their own inconsistencies in order to...
